Empowering Rural Industries: New solutions for a fragile economy
Development of renewable energy generation in many rural areas of the UK, including the west of Scotland, is currently curtailed by grid constraints and the reduction in government incentives for renewable projects. (the intermittent nature of renewable energy supply). This is hindering economic development in some of our most vulnerable communities. New income generating uses for the electricity in these grid constrained areas has the potential to increase both renewable energy use and facilitate the local energy economy.
The innovative ASLEE project overcomes the impact of grid constraints by using the renewable energy at source to power submerged light sheets inside photobioreactors growing microalgae. The integrated manufacturing system creates a high value end product with many potential uses, and also provides a demand side management and grid balancing service for the intermittent renewable energy supply.
Empowering Rural Industries, hosted by the ASLEE project, is a showcase event uniting the energy sector with innovative manufacturing and traditional rural commerce. The one day conference will provide opportunities to engage with experts from energy suppliers, aquaculture, distilleries, forestry, industrial biotechnology, government agencies and academic institutes. Four interactive sessions will highlight the integrated nature of the rural economy and demonstrate how innovation can realise the potential renewable energy resource, building sustainability and community resilience and contributing towards the circular economy.
